The ordinary landscape contains invisible circulation.

A place used for recreation may also be a point through which financial, personal, military, and governmental data passes.

Autonomy Cube

Paglen collaborated with Jacob Appelbaum on Autonomy Cube, a transparent sculpture containing functioning network hardware that routed gallery visitors’ internet traffic through the Tor anonymity network.

The sculpture combines:

  • Minimalist form;

  • technological infrastructure;

  • privacy tool;

Its intended purpose was aesthetic and speculative.

The project asked:

Although technical and political circumstances prevented its full intended realization, the project remains important as an attempt to redirect aerospace infrastructure toward public imagination.

The satellite becomes a counter-image.

Instead of looking down at Earth, it would be looked at.

Instead of gathering data, it would produce a shared visual event.

The Smithsonian displayed one of Paglen’s related prototypes as an object inviting viewers to imagine machinery in the sky that was not surveilling them.

Counter-Infrastructure

Paglen’s practice is not only diagnostic.

Some works attempt to imagine or build alternatives.

A counter-infrastructure is not simply an image criticizing an existing system.

It creates another possibility.
